This week we have started the process of making replicas for the future, in collaboration with the Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC), part of the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University. The replicas are intended to be indiscernible from the originals when viewed through a display case. They are intended for use in the new Hoard gallery (at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) when the original pieces are either on display elsewhere, being conserved or studied.

In collaboration with Birmingham Museums Trust the Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC) have continued their work developing, adapting and refining the various digital technologies available to them to produce a batch of initial, trial, 3D prints of K270 for the museum to evaluate.

Following on from our last blog the waxes are now ready to be processed through the lost wax casting process. It should be remembered that the Anglo Saxon craftsmen would have used different techniques of hammering and soldering to create these objects. Although some objects in the hoard are cast, they would have used the same theory but different technology (more simple) to cast the objects.
