THE search which discovered bones in a Roman copper mine on the Powys border may have been done illegally.
Human bones were discovered last week in the old mine at Llanymynech Caves as a result of metal detector activity.
The bones are currently being investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police forensic experts.
Now a top regional archaeologist is claiming that it was illegal to use metal detectors on the site during the discovery.

Re: Row over bones discovery
Problem is that we don't have the full facts about this report yet, I read elsewhere that it was cavers who were using metal detectors when they found human remains and informed the relevant authorities of the remains.
If they are bona fide cavers the possibility could be they where doing a cave survey in a new section of caves or a part of an existing mine outwith the area but which connected to Llanymynech Caves which according to the report is scheduled.
If they are metal detectorists then indeed questions need to be asked.

I wonder whether the archaeologist has considered the fact that, the find may be due to the presence of metal detectorists.
Now, I do not think they, the finders, were there illegally, otherewise why would they have brought the remains to the notice
of the authorities ?
That, possibly being the case, then their "illegal" activity could not have been considered to be such, until the bones were found.
Maybe the archaeologist could explain his/her thinking.
