A DELIVERY driver from Grays used a metal detector to steal a gold Roman coin from a private estate in Norfolk.
Roy Wood, 52, of Lytton Road, appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, September 29, and pleaded guilty to using sophisticated equipment to find a gold Roman coin at Castle Acre, Norfolk.
The coin originates from the period of the Emperor Valentinian, and was valued at £200.

I think that, anyone who breaches the law, should be brought to justice, and, we all need to remember that, a claim of lack of knowledge is no defence.
Also, if anyone who gets a prosecution should be banned from membership of any club or organisation connected with the hobby of metal detecting,
as well as any rally.

Re: Another hawker gets done!
quite agree john, however banning someone from any membership of any club or organisation connected with the hobby of metal detecting wont stop them from buying another/owning a detector, they should be served with an ASBO or whatever they like to call them now which would make it a criminal offence to own or have in their possession any electronic item related to the hobby of metal detecting. oh, and cut their fingers off so they cant hold a detector just for good measure lolOld Git John wrote:I think that, anyone who breaches the law, should be brought to justice, and, we all need to remember that, a claim of lack of knowledge is no defence.

Re: Another hawker gets done!
BM picked up this guy as he tried to sell "more then one" gold coin and tagged it as a possible hoard? Guys like this really do deserve all that the law can throw at them.

A guy who was apprehended by police for hawking on a protected site is currently running a county detecting club. One of its members also stole a rare coin from a West Country museum.
