Around 21 Americans can be seen, head down, scanning the ground in the heart of East Anglia in the hope of finding their own piece of history.
Metal detecting groups have been visiting the area for nearly 20 years, paying up to £2,200 for the holiday, excluding flights.

Yep, there is someone making a pretty penny or two out of our cousins from across the pond.....and the foolish thing is they dont mind paying for it.
one of thier number contacted me via another forum for some ID's on his hammered coin collection, he also sent me a link to the web site of those that arrange these events, in the blurb it stated that a full ID and PAS recording service was given but no mention of any export licence, when i asked this chap why he hadnt had an ID off the organisation and asked about any export license he suddenly dropped off the face of the earth......read into that what you will!

here's a thought. if they are visiting and revisiting the same fields, and finding hammered, roman celtic etc... wouldn't that then be classed as a hoard? therefore should be fully declared.... pas and the local police need to investigate

The term 'more money than sense' springs to mind :coolestdude:

You could acquire a cracking collection of hammered silver coins from one of the auction sites for the sort of money they are spending on their muddy field experience.

Thinking about it, that's probably where most of their finds come from anyway :g62:

Yes but I think they're allowed to detect until the crops are a few inches high. :g62:

You see heres the thing........if nowt is getting recorded, what has slipped through the net and found its way to a new home accross the pond?
because our american cousins dont have the historical site that we in the UK have they are more than willing to splash out a few grand for a detecting holiday.....in not sure if a certain ex-pat has had his two peneth's worth out of this one either, i seem to think he had a rant at them.
