Flying Scotsman: Fan's tears of joy as historic train returns after 10-year refit

The return of the Flying Scotsman brought tears to the eyes of train enthusiasts when it returned to the tracks after a decade-long refit.

Hundreds of people of all ages lined the tracks and bridges at the East Lancashire Railway's Bolton Street station in Bury to catch a glimpse of the steam locomotive as other trains were suspended for the day.

One woman had tears in her eyes as she watched the famous locomotive steam past her after a 50-year wait.

If I remember rightly my kid Mr T raised steam on the Scot ..somewhere he has a photo of himself on the footplate...he started as a lad cleaning ash trays and fireboxes at the Rosegrove sheds at Burnley proggresed to raising steam then went as fireman on the cement trains over shap summit .he finally ended up second man on diesel/electrics London to Brighton.before giving up .
He still has his training manuals from way back in the 60s ,good old days can remember him throwing gurt great cobs of coal of the tender into our fields between Burnley barracks and Burnley central to be collected after dark ...good old days

That's right bruv, seven of us transferred down to Hornsey just outside Kings cross and it was parked up overnight as the there was a water column on the shed it was doing a round trip up to Scotland and back. As we were fresh off steam locos one of my mates got to steam it to Kings cross as it was on his shift (gutted). Can't take memories away, there is no better feeling than being on the footplate.
