somewhere fun for kids? suffolk

Hi everyone. My 11yr old has bought a metal detector (just a maplin one to start with) and we have no idea where to start. I know we could do beaches but i would like to go somewhere with a bit of history and excitement. abandoned old buildings or mansions sounds cool. Maybe a scary old hospital or something. Does anyone know of any around East Anglia? Either where there are no scary gamekeepers or where it may be possible to get permission? How do people go about permission for gardens of historic houses? Do i just knock on the door and ask? I'm a bit shy to do that. Maybe i could write letters? Thanks guys.
