Re: Museums report many thefts

It's not just the BM that this has been going on in for decades, but many other museums and heritage sites that have artefacts. Heritage sector workers have traditionally had lower wages than other 'professional' trades, so being surrounded by commercially popular items, that are not securely curate...

Re: Barbel ball ?

Depending on size they are either shot or if much bigger then wig curlers. Probably the former.

Re: Man finds large gold nugget in Shropshire

If had been tampered with by man then it would have been classed as treasure, natural things aren't.

Re: Hoard of short cross pennies

When we get them back Pete, I will get a ' group' shot or two. If we don't get them back then we will have to make do with the PAS photos.

Re: Hoard of short cross pennies

Our club was lucky enough to find a hoard of 88 (so far) short cross pennies scattered over about 20 square metres and we are still awaiting the inquest 18 months on. Hopefully the field will get ploughed up after the harvest and we can add to the total, our goal is to get up to at least 100.

Re: Charles 1 silver ring

Re: Charles 1 silver ring

It's not a ring, but a vervel, it is tied to the hawks leg to show who owns the bird.

Re: Battle of Hastings hoard goes to sale

The coins were around the late 600s to 750. Little evidence of settlement of that period exists there and with such a short dating period it seems that a market is the most probable theory.

Re: Battle of Hastings hoard goes to sale

Saxon markets were called a Wic, hence Hampton Wick, Hamwic (Southampton) and Garwic about 20 miles from me in Lincolnshire that is well known amongst detectorists here and now the beards as it has produced around 90 Saxon coins of the gold and silver varieties in one field, with a few strays in nei...
