Well, if it was me, i would start by getting as much info as is possible on the site, especially as you say it has historic significance. After making sure that the area is not a scheduled site, i would try to find the oldest of maps to try and pin down trackways and field boundaries or land feature...

I have dtected ridge and furrow a few times in the past, but found nothing older than georgian. I suspect that you may have better luck with the e-trac as we were using Laser B1's at the time. Good luck, its worth a try!

Truly awful mess. I think that this 'compost' is seriously going to be a long standing health hazard and also a big threat to our hobby. Am i right in assuming that this stuff is from the food waste collection from the council? If so, then this is a national problem that will need to be highlighted ...

Yes, NSEW movement helps pinpoint targets. Circular movements around the outer edge of the target also works well.

The soil tends to be pretty cruel to copper and bronze coins in most areas with the odd exception here and there. I did have a field many years ago that threw up some really nice, pure green bronze coins, and the occasional roman in pristine condition. But it is rare.
