Re: Finds to be purchased

They are not being purchased by taxpayers money but by grants and other fund raising streams as I see it from that article.

Hoards should always stay together in my opinion.

Re: Council won’t pay for brooch

The only exception would be if the farmer is a tenant of the Council and then it becomes complex. I don't agree. If the Council is the land owner then they already have joint ownership of the treasure item, the tenant farmer has no say in the matter. This situation would suit any Council in this po...

Re: Council won’t pay for brooch

The Council are a third party with no ownership interest or part in the agreement between landowner and finder and therefore have no ability to appeal or reject the valuation. That's what this thread is all about, it seems that this particular Council is trying to dictate the value and ignoring, or...

Re: Council won’t pay for brooch

It is UKDN policy not to discuss prices/valuations, but in this case I feel that the real issue here is the principle, which Pete mentions, that authorities seem to be attempting to haggle a valuation down, not on in my opinion. The find should be returned to the landowner/finder and if they agree i...

Re: update on the stolen viking hoard from leominster

Not sure this program will shine a very good light on the hobby after I saw a trailer for it the other night. Especially when it has someone saying that it was a lie that we are only interested in the discovery of history and were really in it for what we can sell things for! :g44:

Re: Saxon Ring fails to sell

It's value is only in what someone is prepared to pay, not what someone says it is worth. Looks like greed has won again. A beautiful find though :g50:

Re: This yours Kev?

Tis my find yes Pops, 20 years ago last August  Although the King's Lynn museum only has 32 staters, the other 7 are still in the landowners safe as they were not deemed part of the hoard as they were found individually over three years - same type of stater and in the exact same area, just s...

Re: I wonder who found this hoard

I know the story featured in the magazines back in the day, but it would be great if we had a permanent hoard topic on the site, where the finders can relate the story for posterity and encourage the newer enthusiasts. Be good to have accounts running between the first glimpse of yellow, right up t...

Re: 13th century seal, find

Definitely for the 14th century Abbott, a no brainer to anyone used to the identification of seal matrices. Reasoning is - 1. The style of the iconography, classic 14th century. 2. The style of the letter shapes are also classic 14th century, especially the T, S and E. 3. People could of had several...
