First thought anglo saxon. Nigel Mills studied bowl and comments it has a very strong viking influence based on the iconography being norse mythology. The bowl weighs 16.1 kilos, is 16 inches in dia and 8 inches deep. There are 8 motifs around the outside of the bowl, 4 of each type. The first 4 shows a warrior with sword with a wolf like animal at his feet eating a snake. The next 4 motifs show 2 beasts facing eachother whose lower bodies become fish. Again with a wolf like animal below eating a snake. The bowl is dated late 9th, early 10th century.
