This is my Mother-in-Laws great uncle.
She is not a happy bunny that the family are selling the VC and I have to agree with her.
There were reports in virtually all the national papers the other day and according to my Mother-in-Law the newspapers got one fact slightly wrong.
Apparently, Private Godley did manage to get away from the bridge after destroying his weapon and was not captured for some hours. The offical Citation, which my Mother-in-Law has seen, also states this. The family feel this may have saved him as the Germans did not connect him to chap that had been mowing them down on the bridge.
Whatever the minor details, a very, very brave man, such a shame that the medal is to be sold to heaven knows who.

Victoria Cross to be sold.
Politicians and nappies have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

Re: Victoria Cross to be sold.
It's a shame when medals have to be sold, but the money is probably of more use.
If it's locked away, nobody sees it anyway.
It would be nice to think that it could go to a regimental museum.

Best case scenario now would be for the Royal Fusiliers or Imperial war museums to aquire it.
