Stash of Roman coins discovered at Yeovil building
http://www.centralsomersetgazette.co.uk ... story.html
A GROUNDWORK contractor stumbled across 1,700-year-old Roman coins when he was working in Yeovil.
Mark Copsey, who had been working on a building site for under a week, went to reverse the bulldozer he was driving and saw something strange in the soil, an inquest heard.
"I was stripping sub soil and I looked behind and noticed a green cloth," he said.
Mr Copsey got out of the bulldozer to investigate and discovered a broken pot and some coins on March 20, 2013.
Not knowing what to do, Mr Copsey made a few calls and eventually got in contact with the local museum and a senior historic environment officer was sent out to examine the findings.

The paper posted the story today, but as you said, Pete the find was three years ago. But it sounds like the inquest has only just happened.
Hectorsfarm you just got to be quicker off the mark, mate.

One does worry if you are lucky enough ever to find a hoard etc that you would live long enough to benefit, especially when you are 'getting on a bit' - I do not detect thinking I will find a hoard, to be honest not really interested in finding one. I do get such a thrill out of finding a single hammered coin though

I should imagine the delay was caused because the land was owned by the council so lots of ummming & ahhhhing went on while somebody tried (and failed) to exclude this chap from his fortunate find.
Ironic that his "boss" wanted in...and he lives in Suffolk (surrounded by stuff) and finds it in the quieter lands og the south west. Least he did the right thing rather than just bagging them & going home!

I've taken my share of the reward of finding a small hoard, it took all of 12.5 months. Four of us found it and we are donating the cash to a local charity. It is not a great deal of money.

Yes it's true - to be honest I think it would just be a lot of hassle to find a hoard, what with the archaeologists taking over and with the length of time it takes to sort it all out etc.bodvoc wrote:dig-it-pete wrote:I do not detect thinking I will find a hoard, to be honest not really interested in finding one.

I have been very lucky in my first year of proper detecting to find a mate like Topdog who has let me loose on his permissions where I have found a lot of hammered silvers as well as a Gold Noble - so who needs a hoard
Though if I did stumble over one I wouldn't grumble

I can understand that. I never go detecting in the belief that I will find something of interest, if I do, that is a bonus.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

About par for the game Barry. Perhaps Mr B will now start posting articles relating to his hatred of JCB drivers,
and how they are destroying our heritage.
