The remains of 19-year-old Hans Wunderlich had lain undiscovered since his aircraft, believed to be a Messerschmitt, came down in farmland near Birkelse, a village 155 miles northwest of Copenhagen, in October 1944. His body and the plane's wreckage was found by Klaus Kristiansen and his 14-year-old son, Daniel.
Mr Kristiansen said: "We went out to the field with a metal detector. I hoped we might find some old plates or something for Daniel to show in school."

Re: German WWII pilot and crashed plane discovered
A double edged story this, apparently it was the lad who found the pilot, which must have caused him much stress/shock, but also great pride.
However, the second edge is a happier event, in that the family of Hans will by now have had a chance to give the 19 year old hero a proper burial.
It was shown on t.v. news a week or so ago, thanks Tom, for posting the news report by Sky. Nice that detectorists can bring closure in so many different ways.

I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

He unfortunately has no living family left so will be buried in a war cemetery in Denmark most likely John.

Re: German WWII pilot and crashed plane discovered
Interesting story - I wonder why the rest of the plane was buried so deep at 16 feet?

What a shame, but at least he will now have a fitting burial. Thank you Tom.tomredmayne wrote:He unfortunately has no living family left so will be buried in a war cemetery in Denmark most likely John.
