Hunting for treasure at low tide

Post by PhilD »

Joseph Fox photographed the mudlarkers who comb the shore of London's River Thames. Originally a term for the city's poor who scraped a meagre living by scavenging in the river's mud, it has been adopted by a new breed of treasure hunters, often armed with metal detectors.
These men and women show off their favourite finds, and discuss the joys of mudlarking..............

The amount they get charged for permission my, to some, appear expensive, but taken over a period
it is worth every penny. Some wonderful finds have come to light due to their dedication.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

Not a mention in the article about permits or what they can/can`t do! Cue lots of folk turning up and the PLA getting very shirty.

I hope that you don't mind Phil, but I have copied this from the place you said it was ;

Anyone wishing to search the tidal Thames foreshore in any way for any reason must hold a current foreshore permit from the Port of London Authority.

They changed the permit rules a few months ago so even beachcoming is not possible without a licence, i think its a ploy to generate some revenue, and not really enforceable,

Not worth putting it to the test.

yes I am very confused about the whole beachcoming situation at the moment... :g56:
I don't do a lot to be honest but I remember getting a email pretty instantly from the crown estates with my permit. I know that thats not the case now so now what do we do?

You don't need a Crown Estate permit for the timebeing.

From the website; We are currently looking into the metal detecting registration process. As such, you are not required to obtain a permit but must read our terms and conditions (see link below) before conducting any metal detecting on Crown Estate foreshore.
