Post by Brianmo »

Did you know? Edinburgh Castle was built on an extinct volcano!

Unbeknown to the castle builders of the time, Castle Rock is the plug of an extinct volcano estimated to have formed around 350 million years ago during the carboniferous period

Thank you for the link Brian. It is said, in some books, that Carn Brea, which is between the towns of Redruth and Camborne in Cornwall, is also the site of a long since defunct volcano, and that several of the large bays along the north coast of the county are the result of a tsunami.

Yes, I certainly did know that the Castle was built on an extinct volcano. I think there are a few others too. Why a tsunami and not The Flood ???

the tsunami is recorded in the geological and fossil records, the volcano itself was very extensive, stirling castle is built on a vent 23 miles away and across the forth valley hill of beath hill in fife is a vent from the same massive volcano 16 miles away!! arthurs seat 1 mile away is part of the main crater and the site of an iron age fort, mark of iron age ploughing still exist.

Yes, of course Stirling castle too. I'd forgotten about that one, but remembered Arthur's seat. Do you know what date the tsunami was recorded?

Enjoy.

I live 23 miles East of Edinburgh and the whole area (including my home town) is riddled with extinct volcanos and related volcanic activity but they have no chance of becoming active now (so the geologists say !!!!!) :g43: :g43: :g43: :g43:

the plates moved significantry 300 million years ago which made the volcano extinct and caused the tsunami
