Re: OOPS..
Its kick the BM time again .... the alternative would be to fail to declare treasure items coz some scumbag will nick it!!! That would be the advice for those living in some alternative reality!

we can live in hope ... hope is a great thing ... we all thrive on it .... but the act of writing an item off ... implies that there is no hope.dig-it-pete wrote:Well lets hope they find it

Re: OOPS..
I used to frequent the BM. a lot in the seventies. When Dr kent ran the coin dept.
You could make an appointment. to see him & take your finds .The coin dept used to be like a bank vault . With a steel door & you had to sit outside & wait until your appointment, was due ,, & the door would open ..
When I think back,, he was very tolerant of some of the clapped out coins I used to take to him to identify.
This was the early days of detecting ,, when their wasn't a lot of information out their to help you id said coin..
When you think that at the time the BM had over a million coins in their vaults. But only a very small percentage were on display at any one time .
Getting back to the missing ring ,,If the gem department security was anything like the coin department security ,, I cant see how it could go missing,, Or mislaid.

Re: OOPS..
I wonder what would happen if a metal detectorist lost a valuable historic find before it got to the BM - something along the lines of the King Alfred Jewell for instance Could we just say 'we lost it, sorry' and then just right it off as lost

Really? Do you have any concept of the sheer volume of things that flow through the greatest Museum in the world or are you just being a male chicken?
I`ve seen lots of folk alleging Treasure Items have been "lost" however I have yet to see any evidence....care to provide some? EG: Documentary evidence...Treasure receipt & letter confirming "loss" ??
I won`t hold my breath.

Re: OOPS..
Explain how a £750,000 ring gets lost? Volume of items as I see it has nothing to do with it. That ring was not just shoved in a drawer somewhere but would have been securely locked in a safe and if it wasn't there is something very wrong with their system.

Re: OOPS..
Why is it that so many people seem to be anti-British ... anti-BM. Its like they foul up a few times and people are so quick to trash the Treasure process.
