Hoard of Roman Silver Denarii found in Dorset

Post by dig-it-pete »

A hoard of Roman silver Denarii of approx 600 in number were found on a dig near Bridport in Dorset yesterday. Looks like one of the biggest and most important finds of it's kind in the UK.

There is live footage of the 'live' dig on Stephen Aukers Youtube page - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_haafbZemc

Awesome, it must have been fantastic to have been in the field when the coins were being excavated :g38: :g50:

I think the hoard contained just over 600 silver coins and some very rare ones amongst them :g50: Certainly one of the most significant Roman hoards ever found in the UK :g58:

Unfortunately I was not there but on another dig :g48: I did have friends who were there though and watched it being unearthed :g56:

Mouth watering,it's the age of them that sets it apart as mostly republican or just on the transition into the flavian dynasty, just brilliant, cheers edd.

Apparently it was a disaster as it wasn't handled properly and coins went here there and everywhere so it will never be known the full extent of the hoard. Blame the organisers!!

Totally agree - very poorly handled and not at all good for the hobby. The field should have been cleared the moment they realised it was a scattered hoard and in my view only the finder of the hoard should have been allowed to continue searching but of course there is some doubt now as to who actually found the hoard first!!?

It will all come out in the wash when it goes to the Coroners enquiry no doubt.

Yes I like many was VERY disappointed watching the live streaming video at the number of people still detecting and massed around the Archeologist.

I was also surprised at the amount of people allowed to amass around the hole and some were detecting only yards away lol... shocked they didnt clear the area and stop others detecting for scattered finds
