hunter diigs up bishops gold ring in farmers field
https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/89911 ... op-auction
Metal detectorist Adam Day, 30, was astonished to make the discovery and knew immediately it was something special.
The 20-carat gold ring, engraved with St George, was found in a field near Beverley Minster in Yorkshire and is thought to have once belonged to a bishop and is worth around £10,000.
Mr Day, a lorry driver from East Hull who took up the hobby three years ago, said: "I was shaking when I found it.
"It was quite close to the surface, not buried deep in the ground. It is engraved with St George and St Catherine and features floral emblems.

What a lovely story, thank you for posting the link.
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

I suppose it depends on the soil conditions and if there has been any earth movement We have a Medieval fair site from the time of King John and nearly all the finds are within 2-4" of the surface.ageezer wrote:strange no sinking in soil

Medieval bishop's ring found by detectorist sells at auction for £7100
A 15th century bishop’s ring found by a metal detectorist near Beverley Minster in Yorkshire sparked a bidding battle at auction this week.
Adam Day, an HGV driver from East Hull, found the ring in a farmer’s field near the minster, and he was on hand to watch the battle to own his medieval treasure unfold.
He travelled to Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire, where the ring was auctioned off, and saw the hammer fall at £7,100, having had a guide price of £8-10k. The ring sold to a private UK buyer.

Re: hunter diigs up bishops gold ring in farmers field
I am not an experienced detectorist [In fact quite a n00b] So please explain in easy to understand words where I have got it all wrong ...
The ring is precious metal [over 10%] as it seems to be solid gold ...
Its over well 300 years old ...
It has significant historic provenance ...
So why is it not declared as Treasure? and allowed to go to open auction? - Now I am somewhat confused

It will have been declared treasure but no museum was interested or if they were they could not raise the money to buy it. Therefore it will be disclaimed and returned to the finder and landowner to be kept or sold as they seem fit
I have become comfortably numb

It qualified as Treasure under the Act, but only the coroners inquest can actually declare it as Treasure. Since it never reached inquest (as it was disclaimed) it was only ever potential Treasure.
