Two coins found on farmland are "very rare" survivors from a Saxon mint, a treasure inquest has heard...........

Re: 'Very rare' Saxon coins found by detectorist
Well I don't know about a rare one Phil - I would be over the moon to find a so called 'COMMON' one
Did Joe public ever use Saxon coins? Answers on a postcard please. I think as we find hardly any at all I doubt it, as surely they would have lost them, the same as they did for the Henry 11 pennies onwards? So my question is what happened to the millions of Saxon pennies that were minted in the UK, who were they actually minted for? Do not tell me they all ended up as Danegeld, as I do not believe that to be the case.
Thanks for posting Phil:g50:

Unbelievably a cut half Aethelred was one of the first hammered coins I found with my first detector a Garrett Ace 250 and firmly concreted my love and fascination for metal detecting... Click Here

Have to agree, the saxon coins do seem to have no relation in number to later coinage. I too have very few.
Professionally aimless wandering.

Their was a program I watched on late tv.. a few weeks ago.
The theory was that the Saxons didn't move into Britain in great numbers .
Just a few important families .. the higher end of saxon life so to speak.
That's why their is so few saxon finds ..Coins ect..
