I suppose it must happen from time to time JC, someone finds an item of treasure in their garden, but I know where you are coming from. It has been recorded as treasure, so think it is a genuine find and what a lovely find it is too :g58: :g50:

"Ms Young, a former archaeology student,".................. Alarm bell Number 1.

"Now Ms Young is keen to sell the treasure. She’d like it to stay in Cornwall but the Truro museum is ‘unable to buy it’. Alarm Bell Number 2.

Maybe she could just donate it as both landowner & finder???? "For the benefit of Cornwall" ??

Cynical..... moi? lol

Knowing Crantock well, I believe her. The place is so tiny, on the coast, and steeped in history.

A long standing part of its history is about to disappear, Crantock Pasties is closing its doors for ever.

I once found a gold ring while digging the garden for my late father-in-law, he promptly took it off me and gave it to his son :g48: But being a detectorist doesn't make it an iffy find, you do sometimes find stuff while gardening. And I once found a cut half gold hammy while digging trenches for the gas board, I did not have the knowledge to realise how important a find it was at the time, I put it down somewhere in the house and it went missing, I have been moved from that property 40 years now but often wonder if its under the skirting or behind the fireplace or if it was taken to school by one of my kids for swaps ?? :g43:

Right has anyone else ever found anything interesting while digging in their garden or in someone else's garden?

I always look very closely when walking around the walled vegetable gardens of the big houses that are open to the public and think that the gardeners who work there must have found some interesting finds over the years.

Only two finds I have had in this way were a Scottish Charles 1st turner (equivalent to the English rose farthing) In really good readable condition from my garden and a Scottish ecclesiastical farthing of James 3rd minted 1460-80 once again readable condition in a local park flower bed where it was lying on the surface. Both made of copper, not worth much but very interesting.

I was once asked by an old lady to look for her wedding ring, she had been cutting privet hedges at the end of my mam and dad's street, the ring had slipped off her finger, my dad had told her on the way home from the pit that his son (me) had a metal detector and would ask me to look for it :g58: So I went up with this old c-scope, well it was new at the time, and started to proceed with my search, I was heading in one direction along the hedge line, when through the corner of my eye saw the glint of gold, nowhere near where my detector was :g48: I was so disappointed not to have found it with my detector but the old lady was over the moon :g58:

Last week, whilst digging over the front garden, I found the back half of a toy lead camel, two days later I found the front half, ten feet from the first bit, what are the chances of that eyes only?
I have become comfortably numb

I don't think us detectorists miss much when digging the land we get used to spotting the different colours and textures :g58:
