Sadly, it is impossible to tell what you have "caught" with your magnet, until it breaks the surface in the vast majority of waters being fished.
Next will come calls to ban the hobby, followed by those who ignore such legislation, carrying on doing it. Only a serious incident will make folk who enjoy magnet detecting think twice before continuing with their hobby.
Many of us will remember when they could play in the mud, swing from a rope thrown over a tree branch, and even throw glass bottles up high trees, to knock down conkers, and they hurt if you were daft enough to not get out of the way. Nobody banned us, just got told we were messy sods, who "might" hurt yourself.

I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.
