New variant means lockdown 3 ‘may not be as effective as March’s shutdown’

England’s latest lockdown may not work as effectively as measures imposed in March due to the fast-spreading Covid-19 variant, scientists fear. Boris Johnson announced the package of strict measures on Monday evening and ordered everyone to ‘stay at home’ in a return to the sombre messaging the nation heard last year. Just one day after the prime minister urged parents to send their children back to the classroom, he announced all schools and colleges would close from today until at least the February half-term. They will remain open to vulnerable pupils and those with key worker parents. Experts said it was ‘inevitable’ that England would be plunged into lockdown for a third time due to spiralling infection rates, and although the strict measures are largely similar to the March shutdown, scientists fear they may not be as effective. Professor Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, said the mutant variant is a ‘game changer’. He said: ‘Given the estimates of the transmissibility of the new variant, this lockdown may not be as effective as the one last March.

Spray 'reduces risk by up to 78%'

Once sprayed into the nose, the gel forms a layer, preventing viruses from reaching your nasal membranes.

Meanwhile, the spray also contains a small amount of citric acid that slightly alters the pH within the nasal cavity, killing viruses on contact.

Dr Dalia Meggido, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nasus Pharma, the firm behind the spray, said: “Taffix is not a replacement for masks, it is an additional layer of protection.

“Masks clearly help prevent infections, but they do not offer 100% protection.

"Taffix provides an additional layer of protection, which is particularly useful in high-risk settings such as public transport, shops and schools — basically any enclosed space.”

During trials conducted at the University of Virginia, Taffix was found to kill 99.99% of SARS-CoV-2.

And in real-life settings, it was found to reduce the risk of catching the virus by up to 78%, with no side effects.
