I'm watching a programme on the Sci Channel, African Bushmen the master animal trackers are being trained to use a Palmtop connected to a Garmin GPS to collect information on animal movements within a national park. They use symbols to log animal signs, behaviour, type, etc. Once down loaded onto a PC they can work out populations etc. A way too cool application of tech. with old skills.
They even can ID food plants an animal is eating and the amount of available food types. Once the tracker hands over the tool, the park can plan for population growth and work out how good a tracker is by the quality of the data. If the tracker finds something new then the programmer can add extra icons and is a fluid process.
Probably costs an arm and a leg, but this could be adapted for other uses, like logging finds in the field?
