Hammered pennies
Does anyone know if there is a definitive book on hammered pennies? I can't for the light of day find the chris wren ones on the internet and find it hard to believe his are the only ones in existence? Thanks

Re: Hammered pennies
Thanks to you both. Its just a shame that the entire period of medieval pennies is not documented in one book say Stephen to charles 1st

Re: Hammered pennies
The one bible on the subject is "English Coins 1180-1551" by Lord Stewartby. Published by Spink in 2009...............if you have £65.00 to spare.
It is a stunningly detailed account of the coinage though........mine is very well-read and invaluable................

Re: Hammered pennies
North is excellent and covers all the coinage from early Anglo Saxon to Charles II but is a little outdated now.
I use a combination of Spink, North, Stewartby and a plethera of others to cross-reference and narrow down a coin when doing ID's. It's not a cheap hobby, but I love doing the research and books are the tools of the trade............
