Does anyone know if there is a definitive book on hammered pennies? I can't for the light of day find the chris wren ones on the internet and find it hard to believe his are the only ones in existence? Thanks

Thanks to you both. Its just a shame that the entire period of medieval pennies is not documented in one book say Stephen to charles 1st

The one bible on the subject is "English Coins 1180-1551" by Lord Stewartby. Published by Spink in 2009...............if you have £65.00 to spare.

It is a stunningly detailed account of the coinage though........mine is very well-read and invaluable................ :g58:

Thanks Tom.......I'd better start saving lol. Incidentally Tom, I posted a Stephen hammered up a week ago and emailed Martin Allen at Fitzwilliam but as yet have not had a response. Is he generally a busy man? Cheers

JJ North is good too, not sure if it covers the whole period, though. It's in 2 volrmes.

North is excellent and covers all the coinage from early Anglo Saxon to Charles II but is a little outdated now.

I use a combination of Spink, North, Stewartby and a plethera of others to cross-reference and narrow down a coin when doing ID's. It's not a cheap hobby, but I love doing the research and books are the tools of the trade............ :g58:
