old VLF Cscope

Post by litwardle »

Hi all,

Looking for my first detector and on a tight budget. I've seen the Cscope 'vr 770D, an old VLF sheppards crook machine. I can get it for much less than £50 and was wondering if it would be a good detected to start with or if you think I'd find it frustraiting or indeed wether it would be much use?

Here is a link I found with some good photos and info: http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-us/aucti ... 3200f20c80

Many thanks
Lee

Hmmmmm.... not sure about your choice of detector!

What you really need to do when first getting into the hobby is actually find stuff :g42:

If you increase your budget I'm sure some of the more informed on here can point you in the direction of a 'decent' first time detector?

And don't ignore the second hand market :g62:

Like I said above.... have a look at the second post on this thread:

Hi Lee, you really need to try to increase your budget, as Mike has said, to help you in that respect, I would suggest
that you contact one, or more dealers, and ask for their advice. I use Regtons, but there are others.

Try not to go "cheap", as that more often than not will be exactly what you get "cheap", far better to buy an inexpensive
machine on which you can get credit payments. A good starter machine would be the likes of a Garrett Ace 250, which
sells for less than £200 new. There are a few very capable detectors now on the market, including the GO FIND range
by Minelab, Whites have a couple of newish starter machines, as do Techneticks, with one known as the Digiteck

Don't turn away from the used market, as there are bargains to be had. Do however take advice from dealers.

Best of luck Lee.

You could buy the c-scope as a collectors piece and by all means give it a go you will not lose much money :g58: But I think you will be disappointed with your finds rate :g58: Most modern detectors are much lighter other than minelabs? although these are brilliant machines :g50: Your budget is far too low even in the secondhand market, but there is a lot of new models coming onto the market that are having great success in making finds, the Technetics and Garret range, and the latest minelabs. Make sure you buy from a dealer or friend or from someone you are confident of the history of the detector, because a lot of people have been scammed by buying fake detectors online and are now trying to offload their mistakes onto unsuspecting newbies, who with no experience will not even realize the detectors are not working properly, possibly blaming their own inexperience :g58: :g44:

Thank you all for your advice! Just to be clear, my budget isn't £50, I just saw this on eBay for £45 ono so I didn't know if it was worth taking a punt.

Budget wise sadly it's going to be about £100 tops at the moment, but that said, I'm not in a massive rush so can put a bit by. Budget restrictions are mainly wife related..."How much?!!!!"

Ok, I will stay so clear of the antiques, I wouldn't buy a new cheap Chinese thing form the likes of maplin. I'm a licenced radio amateur, and radio kit is very pricey. The old 70s stuff sends and recwives, as does the new £1000 plus gear, it just does it with less features that make life easier on the operator. I wasn't sure if it was the same with detecting.

The garret Ace 250 seems to be the one, although I would probably buy used.

Regards

Lee

It is a good machine Lee, my best recommendation being the finest Roman brooch I ever had hands on, which was found by a member of
the Southwest Searchers, when he was an absolute newbie, and only on his first or second outing. You may be able to get short term credit on one.

I tend to draw a comparison with buying a new guitar. If you go for a very cheap one it is more difficult to play and the sound is not so good so it puts you off learning to play and you give up early, disappointed.
Try to go for lower mid range guitar ( or detector) and the results will be better and you will be encouraged to move on to better as you will get better returns for your investment.

Had a look At regtons, New ace 250 is only £189 so that's pretty doable.

I started with an ace250. Excellent first machine. I picked up a used one for £125, used it for a year and when I upgraded I sold it for £110.
They hold their value very well as they are a very, sort after, first machine.
Good luck.
