What types of metal detectors are out there?

What types of metal detectors are out there and which are suitable for a beginner

There are many metal detectors on the market in the UK and it's sometimes difficult for a beginner to make a choice as to which machine would be suitable as a starter machine.

Unless you are intending to do some specialist searching you will not need several particular types, i.e. hoard hunting detectors specially designed to look for deeply buried items and Pulse induction detectors, specifically designed in the main, for serious beach or underwater searching.

The prime type of detector sold today is the VLF (Very Low Frequency) model which comes in countless guises from a very simple child’s detectors to the top of the range professional detectors costing around £1000 apiece.

The main manufacturers are companies from the UK, USA, Australia, and France and include the trade names Minelab, Whites, Tesoro, XP, Laser, Viking, Garrett, Fisher and C-Scope.

With the beginner in mind we will discount many of the mid to high range machines and produce a list of other machines that will suit the beginner.

With the help of http://www.metaldetectors4u.co.uk we can safely say that the Garrett Ace 150 & 250 detectors, the lower end Viking machines along with the lower end C-Scope machines will all be suitable.

The XP ADX 100 and ADX 250 detectors would be great and are versatile as are any second-hand Tesoro Silver Sabre or Laser Rapier. Some of the Whites range would suit, detectors such as the Prizm III are well respected as are second-hand Whites XLT’s although the beginner must be aware that these are computerized.

UKDN can only suggest that once you think you have your chosen detector please pop across to the UKDN Forum and ask for further advice there.
