Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Mick
Yes Dioz has it with the 13th Light Dragoons. This style was introduced around 1830 and stayed in use until 1861.
The NM is certainly an early one but for me it's a new one, could you PM me an approx find area it might help but I suspect it could well be a new one.
Cheers for posting them

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Yeti
Nice Cambs finds as always, no worries on the image as the one I have on the site was a rather nice example.
In regards to your NM find...
Firstly, its really early which makes it very rare in its own right as it has the depiction of St Edward's crown which indicates that.
The guys I know are pretty sure Northumberland can be eliminated, which leaves us only with Notts Norfolk & Northants. By 1778 Notts are certainly using a known type, similarly Northants have their 'lion' pattern in use by a similar date. The 1768-1778 period buttons are in many cases, as yet, unrecorded as so few have survived (or not yet been dug up!). Norfolk comprised TWO regiments from the very start, East & West, so far less likely. The button therefore can only be attributed to the Notts or Northants Militias at this stage.
Great find

Re: The Early Military Button project
Apologies Phil for having missed the one you have already found!
The Volunteer units included Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry and of course Engineers. Date wise I think this is 1855-81.
Tinner, nice 33rd Regt of Foot, who between 1782-1853 when this button would have been worn were the 1st Yorkshire West Riding Regt of Foot. It appears o be of the design which came in around 1852, and should have some writing on the garter rim that runs round the edge?
Hope that helps

Re: The Early Military Button project
Hi Tinner
Really nice early one this. The 33rd Regt of foot gained the (1st Yorkshire West Riding) title in 1782 and its to the unit yours dates. The earliest ones had s roped rim and this design then replaced it, so date wise could be from c1790 onwards and was gone by 1840 at the latest so that's your probable date range. Interesting in that period the 33rd gained the Waterloo battle honour, so who knows perhaps a witness to one of the most famous land battles of all time
