Thanks again, all very interesting. Looking at the image again this morning, the first word looks something like 'virtues' but I could easily be very wide of the mark.

The following two mottos, and families that used them, are from Fairbairn's 1905 book of crests, and of the families named, Coventy appears to be the only one with a crest anything like the one on the button.

Candide et constanter (Candidly and steadily); Coventry, Grimshaw, Irvine, Pickup, Sassoon.

Virtute et constantia (By courage and perseverance); Auld, Townend.

It's not unusual for mottos on livery buttons to be different to what they're supposed to be. :g50:

DiOz wrote:I found the following regarding COVENTRY cousins marrying........
"In 1823 Thomas William Coventry married his cousin Anne Coventry, the youngest daughter of his uncle John Coventry (the 6th Earl's youngest son). Thomas and Anne had several children but separated in 1834".
I did some more research on the two cousins and found the following......

Thomas William Coventry was born on 23 July 1800.
He was the son of Hon. Thomas William Coventry and unknown Clarke.
He married Anne Coventry, daughter of Hon. John Coventry and Anne Clayton, on 20 July 1823.
He died on 16 February 1882 at age 81.
Children of Thomas William Coventry and Anne Coventry -
Sophia Mary Coventry
Olivia Emile Coventry d. 30 Jun 1865
Gilbert Walter Coventry b. 4 Apr 1837, d. 28 Feb 1909
Corbet John Coventry b. 4 Jun 1838, d. 29 Jan 1916

The following birth notice appeared in an 1838 "The Gentleman's Magazine"....

At Redlynch House, the wife of Thomas William Coventry, esq. a son.

Redlynch House (in Wiltshire) was apparently bought by Thomas William Coventry in 1837, and is about 8 miles south of Salisbury. :g50:

Fascinating research. I live just a couple of miles from Redlynch Wiltshire however, I can find a Redlynch House in Somerset (where there is a village of the same name) but not Wiltshire

Redlynch House being bought by Thomas William Coventry in the year 1837, may not be correct....I should have said the sale had apparently taken place by 1837.

Was the button found far from Redlynch House?

Another button, same farm but bit more 'blingy' than the last. It measures 28mm. I can't see any evidence of a backmark.

Great! Thanks for that. I can confirm that Trafalgar Park is nearby and was gifted to the descendants of Admiral Lord Nelson by a grateful nation. His descendants lived there until the mid 20th century and a number are buried in the churchyard on the estate. The church has not been in use for many years but the graveyard is accessible to the public. Incidentally, if anyone has a spare £12 million, Trafalgar Park is up for sale.
