It's a Baronet HUGHES family livery button....
Image Click Here

The initials of the first 5 HUGHES baronets of East Bergholt in Suffolk, are the same as on the button...RH... Click Here

The "Hand of Ulster" badge (between the initials) indicates the button is from a Baronet's household.

Thanks for a great i.d., Dave - the Hughes family only lived about 15 miles from the find spot.

Possible Baron St JOHN 2crest livery button.JPG
Possible Baron St JOHN 2crest livery button.JPG (25.72 KiB) Viewed 10917 times
As the left crest usually provides the family surname, it could be a "Baron St JOHN" family livery button...but for a more specific ID the family the right crest represents may need to be known.

Are the button maker's details are on the back? ...if so it may be possible to find out when it was made, to help with the ID.

I IDed this button (found in Northamptonshire) a couple of years ago, as a "Baron St JOHN of Bletso" livery button.....

Had these three yesterday. Apologies if they're not all livery. Found in South Wiltshire.

First one is a hunting button, second is a General Service military button. The third needs some research to find the family that used this crest.

Cheers Kev, I suspected that at least one of the first two would be military

Thanks for that Dave. I would say you've nailed it. I can't see the detail any clearer in the hand than it shows in the photo. Geographically, it was found approx 50-60 miles from its home so not unreasonable. The back mark is Doughty of St Martins Lane which I think suggests a date prior to 1875 as I believe the business was sold to Firmins then.

Thanks Dave, seems the Nepean family is the more likely
