I think the marks are parts of scratched numerals rather than a privy mark. Thanks for showing me Tom but I don't think there is enough there to add to the Gallery.

Thanks Stu. will the XVII relate to the cloth weight or length of the bolt?

Probably neither! those dimensions normally appear in the centre of the seal rather in the inscription around the edge.

Possibly a token, but that sticky-out bit at 2 o'clock makes me think this might be half of a two-part bagseal? It's only 1.5mm thick, which is a bit thin for a token.

I'll check in your book when I go into the office tomorrow, but thought you might be able to enlighten me and save me looking......

Could well be a single disc from a cloth seal but the lack of a rivet stub or hole would suggest it was an inner disc from a four-part seal - if so you would expect a sticky-out bit for the connecting strip and another sticky-out bit where it joined to either the rove or rivet disc! Having said all that, it is known that some cloth seal discs were 'tidied up' to be used as tokens. See page 18 & 158 in my book. All this gets you no closer to finding what cloth seal it was (if it was one) !!! Here is the best match I can find on the Gallery - http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2095 which leads you off on another 'is it / isn't it a token loop. A couple more definite cloth seal anchors but not yours I think - http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.ph ... emId=22920 & http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.ph ... emId=22676 :)

That's really interesting, thanks - the one on the link you sent was 'found near Colchester'. I found my one just outside St. Osyth, quite near Colchester, while on holiday last week.

Could you try and get a shot or two of the side please - another one I'm not sure is a seal or not!
