What is a Voided Coin & why are they void ?

i guess its as they have a void between the 2 reverse crosses.

I would think it is because of the gap between the cross at a guess.

'Voided Cross' (French: Croix Vidée) is simply a heraldic term for when only the edge of the cross is traced. So the centre of the cross is hollow. Maybe this was done so that it would be much easier to cut them into halfs and quarters.

The voided long cross and short cross coins are so-called because each arm of the cross on the reverse is made up of two lines, creating a "void" or gap in the centre of each arm. This was done so that a coin could be cut into halves or quarters and still leave one side of the cross arm showing on each cut piece. So long as you could see the arm of the cross on your cut half or quarter, then you knew you had not been short-changed.

When the solid long-cross coins of Edward I came in, this was because the void was not needed any more as he produced round halfpennies and farthings.........
