A few days ago there was a thread started on Detecorist, in which the question of whether a riverbed can ever be a SM.
I contacted Nick Russell, aat English Heritage about it, and received this reply this morning. I felt that it would be of general interest, particularly the final sentence, regarding depth.
Message BodyHi John
As far as I know there is no reason that a riverbed couldn't be included in a SM (or more correctly a river bed being included within the scheduled area of a SM). It's unlikely that it would be scheduled as a 'river bed' itself as it would need to constitute 'works', however, it certainly could include part of a river bed. The obvious examples being fords. Also, there are a number of mill leats, old canals (usually disused), and monastic waterworks that are scheduled.
Just for interest re: depth, a scheduling, unles otherwise stated, extends to the core of the earth!
All the best
Nick

SM's and riverbeds
I used to have an issue regarding having an inferiority complex, I no longer have an issue with being inferior.

Re: SM's and riverbeds
the mudlarks were finding plenty of good finds in Queenhithe dock ,between Blackfriars bridge and Southwark Bridge on the thames ,but then it was made a SM to stop them digging there .this was 25 years ago .

Re: SM's and riverbeds
Queenhithe was NOT scheduled because of finds but because in the early 1970s it was proposed to fill in the dock for redevelopment it was not realised by either the Museum or the mudlarks that it had been scheduled so it was only when the licence was introduced that the dock became off limits
