Men convicted of ‘nighthawking’

Post by Puffin »

Two men who were caught illegally using a metal detector at a Peterborough historical site have been sentenced at court.

Keith Stacey and Samuel Wildman, from Kettering, were convicted of unlawful metal detecting at Durobrivae Roman town, a protected Roman site at Water Newton near the city.

About time we started to see some prosecutions for night hawking - I would also liked to have seen mention that their detectors were seized and destroyed by the police - do you know if this happened Phil?

I also think they should have been fined a lot more heavily, at least a few thousand £'s each which might help to be more of a deterrent.

These idiots just give every detectorist a bad name :g44:

The sentences were far too light, and will do nothing to put a stop to their life on crime.

''The detectorists’ activity was witnessed by a farm worker who was able to take photographic evidence and reported the incident to Cambridgeshire Police and Historic England''.

A photo of them detecting and the car at the site would seal the fate of nighthawks without the need to confront them on site.

I take it these two idiots were 'Dayhawking' rather than Nighthawking then if photographs were taken of them out in the fields? Sounds like they were just asking to be caught.
