Lovely find mate ...
Fancy having a name like "King Sihtric Caoch"
I don't even think I would want the King bit ... [Sunray is bad enough]

Phil ... I lost faith when an american founding fathers coin found near Donny was valued at a million ... which I think went on to fetch £5k at auction.
I was a tadge red faced as I had told all my farmers that a £1,000,000 pound coin is a possibility.

Hoards are better John for both financial and historical value in my opinion rather than a single coin.

The finder was a mate of mine and he was stitched up by the Yankee auction house that coin went on and made much more money I believe.oldfossil wrote:Phil ... Really? Are we sure he didn`t just believe the hype and got bitten by reality?Donnydave wrote:The finder was a mate of mine and he was stitched up by the Yankee auction house that coin went on and made much more money I believe.oldfossil wrote:Phil ... in my honest opinion that coin should have been sold in the States & marketed properly but there was such a rush some fingers got burnt and they missed the correct market for such.

One hopes the land isn`t/wasn`t under stewardship as well if that is the case...Jellytussle wrote:Shame he didn't bother recording it on the PAS or UKDFD.....
Re: Rare Viking coin found in a Nottinghamshire field
Not having detected stewardship land ... is there a specific bar on detecting this land? If land is under the plough what possible harm can be done?
I NOTE THAT PAS STATE THE FOLLOWING:
There are no restrictions on metal-detecting on Entry Level Stewardship land providing searchers follow the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting in England and Wales and that the landowner/farmer occupier's permission is obtained: Natural England requires up to 12 weeks notice of any large scale metal-detecting events (known as rallies).
So before we start knocking detecting on stewardship land ... lets realise that PAS say there are NO RESTRICTIONS on Entry Level, so I would say ... go for it lads and lasses!

Re: Rare Viking coin found in a Nottinghamshire field
You can detect the land John, it's the recording that's compulsory, it's written into the agreement.

Re: Rare Viking coin found in a Nottinghamshire field
Thank-you very much for the clarification Phil, now I understand the context of JCM's comment about stewardship land.PhilD wrote:You can detect the land John, it's the recording that's compulsory, it's written into the agreement.
FLO's briefing below;
Under the code of practice it says "Reporting any finds to the relevant landowner/occupier; and (with the agreement of the landowner/occupier) to the Portable Antiquities Scheme"
My view is that the statement is overly encompassing (as PAS dont want to know about finds less than 300 years old), but also gives the option for the detectorist not to report the finds if the landowner doesn't agree that the find can be reported.
