I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
The travel logger is a GPS that records your route and providing your camera is set to the right time, will insert latitude and longitude details onto each image, thus showing where the photo was taken or the find was found.
I bought one of these from http://www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/GPS_Rec ... OGGER.html for £57.11, including delivery (next day) and I am posting this to give people an idea of what they can do.
The device is really small and light, I fitted it to the shaft of the detector using a Velcro strap through the loop on it's rear. It has a slot to thread a lanyard through but a lanyard is not provided.
The device has red and blue diodes indicating which mode is selected depending on whether steady or flashing (can be a bit confusing), the diodes are not easily seen in bright sunlight.
The device comes with a mini CD with the programme on, my laptop doesn't have a tray that pops out so I ended up taking the disc to a local shop where they burned me a full size CD off it. The software installed it'self without any problems.
On getting home I downloaded and resized the images from my camera so they did not fill the screen on the computer.
You choose what style of display you want, I chose the sporting one as it has details like distance covered and time taken, I chose to leave it running all day I.e. Not turn it off at lunchtime which I think is why the average speed is shown as zero.
I plugged in the USB connector and uploaded the GPS data and uploaded the images. It quickly geo tags the images and saves the route superimposed on Google maps (see attachment). You can edit the titles, add information and rotate any images.
You can also save the file as a .kml for importing into Google Earth. I notice the .kml file looks far more accurate when opened in Google Earth!, looks like it cut the top off in Google Maps (see attachments).
Once in Google Earth you can create a video tour of your route on the day (click on the cine camera on the top toolbar, then click on the red start button and microphone) showing the images and adding background commentary which can be saved as a .kmz file and emailed to friends.
The device output is decimal degrees to 6 places where as my Garmin Geko 201 GPS reports decimal degrees to 5 places, further tests to be carried out on fixed objects to determine the accuracy level, info to follow

Interesting device.
I see it has a Li-ion battery, what sort of life do they reckon you'll get from a charge ?

I love gadgets too JC
I'm not really sure re the charge, the post below on facebook says between 10 & 30 hours depending on the logging interval;

Cheers Steve
The difference between the GT 120 and the GT 100 is;
i-gotU GT-120 USB GPS: What`s New:
Enlarged memory for long trips: 64000 waypoints. 4 times memory than GT-100.
With the new 65nm SiRF starIII chipset, GT-120 features ultra-high sensitivity, extra low-power consumption - up to 30% power savings over earlier GPS modules. The average acquisition time is also much shorter: Cold start < 35sec vs. 60 secs on the GT-100

Re: I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
Phil, I had my unit sat on the dash board on a trip to Heathrow. The faster you travel to less accurate it seems to be and direction changes can throw it. Once I get a chance I shall be attaching it to my kite rig. The time that I shall be running it is an hour or two with minimum recording intervals. Having played with the settings I suspect that the recording accuracy could be dialled in. I know of an ex-TV archaeologist who uses one of these units with his kite photo kit and is happy with it.
After all I think for recording approximent photo locations its ideal but for precise find spot recording there are better units out there, its the cost factor that comes into play, these are pocket money while a Garmin unit isnt chicken feed.

Re: I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
I decreased the waypoint recording interval on mine too Not best suited for recording finds compared to say a Garmin GPS.
I haven't used it for a while, just plugged it in and the hardware settings icon isn't active, might have to re install the device?

Ah it's dropping in and out of connection with the PC, maybe the battery needs to be fully charged, the icon is active one minute and not the next, it's set for recording waypoints at 1 second intervals, battery life 10 hours.

Re: I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
Phil as a follow on from the Pops post, I posted the same image on the Kite Photography forum. A chap on there used a Geko and i-gatu side by side and got 2m difference, with a few spikes, different spikes on different machines. Have you tried running your various GPS units at the same time, together and comparing the output results?

Re: I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
Not done them side by side for an extensive test, most tests independantly, would be worth doing some time.
in my opinion the 3 devices I have I would rate as follows for accuracy, although I am still experimenting with the WAAS downloading the 'almanac' on the Garmin;
1. GPS Director
2. Geko 201
3. i-GotU GT 120
Can't remember the cars sat nav accuracy.

Re: I-gotU GT 120 GPS Travel Logger Test
Thanks Phil, I was thinking of running my E-trax with my i-gatu to compare the results. I am considering flying the i-gatu on the kite rig and using the E-trax as a ground recorder. I often walk a kite around a site to get different views. A log of both ground and air would be useful to have. But I have been told the Alt. can be 1.5X the horizontal track points.
