Two hours detecting carried out on sat 19th march 2005. On one of the warmest days so far this year. The Field had just been drilled and rolled with spring barley. The remaining hour of detecting was carried out on sun 20th march 2005, on an adjacent field drilled with winter wheat and have yealded roman finds in the past. Location North West Essex..


1, 11 Shotgun cartridge and percussion caps..
2, .22 Cartridge case & .22 lead bullet..
3, Half of a large horseshoe..
4, Ball pein hammer head..
5, 5 pieces of scrap lead..
6, 3 Lead bag seals ?..
7, 1 Lead spindle whorl or loom weight..
8, 2 Segments of a crotal bell..
9, 1 Musket ball..
10, 2 pieces of WWII shrapnel..
11 3 bits of CA junk..
12, 1 piece of roman pottery..
13, 3 roman coins. 1 Sestertius and 2 smaller coins..
14, 1 Charles I rose farthing..
15, 5 Buttons made from pewter & CA..
16, Leave the best till last 1 Cunobelin Gold Stater :roll: ..

probably the worst day ever. Pastures near Knaresborough.
2 horseshoes
2 pieces of bronzy material (tips from seed drill?)
1 animal penacillan tube
1 piece lead
1 iron ring
5 assorted iron pieces
20 golf balls - the pasture backed onto a range.

The following items are the result of three hours of detecting on very rough ploughed land . . . made the Alps look flat!

2 four holed buttons
1 18th C button
2 lead sack seals
1 five inch piece of flattened lead piping
1 lead waste
5 cartridge tops
1 piece of fencing wire
1 scrap foil
1 decorative hook
1 iron large headed stud
2 large iron nuts
1 roll of silver foil with paper backing
1 aluminium pie case
1 part of a lid
1 Lilt can squashed

Will submit picture when I can persuade Saaby to scan the finds for me.

Kev, this has to be one of the most fascinating experiments completed online and will go some way toward an understanding of the realities of this hobby. I'm ashamed that I did not get out in all that time, but I was nobbled by circumstances beyond my control. I will help in any way I can with the publishing of these results - as punishment :D

I forgot Kev offered a prize to one lucky participant - well turns out my number came up!!! so if blankreverse can just send that Cunobelin Gold Stater to me.... oh apparently it's going to be a small token of appreciation :(
Seriously well done to Kev and Phil on a most worthwhile undertaking - can't find the original thread so forgotten what kev said he wanted it all for???
