Re: Can anyone help me identify this badge

Yep it's a shoulder belt plate. What the holes are anyone's guess. Could be a brutal repair, could be mounted to something later in life!

Re: Can anyone help me identify this badge

Cheers guys...

Yes 99% certain it's a belt plate but an image of the back would conclude it 100%

No problem Phil, you going to mail the paper? Pretty poor showing by local museum to not be able to ID it and as for 'letters LM open for interpretation...' good grief!!

Re: Can anyone help me identify this badge

It's West Brecon Local Militia. Formed on 23 March 1809 under the command of Lt Col Comm Henry Allen, kept the same name until 1813 when retitled the Breckonshire Regt, they were disbanded in 1816 in line with the end of Local Militias. The design corresponds to their buttons as you would expect. It...

Re: The Early Military Button project

Hi Tinner Nice finds as always First up is the Royal Wiltshire Militia. The addition of the word Royal and style date it 1855-1881 when they made up the 3rd battalion of the Wilts Reg. Next up is an other ranks issue to the 74th Regt of Foot, who didnt hold a county title 1816-45, which is when your...

Re: The Early Military Button project

Hi Tinner, Indeed another nice early one. Its to the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons who were in existence from 1751-1799 when they were disbanded due to the opinion they had performed poorly in service in Ireland and were thus 'unreliable'. They were reformed many years later (1861) as Lancers but the des...

Re: The Early Military Button project

Next one is Nicks

Its certainly appears to be to the 7th Regt of Foot - which is the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt) however this is not a design I m familiar with for them so am going to share it with a friend to see if I can get you a date positive ID.

Cheers
Steve

Re: The Early Military Button project

Hi Brian Catch up on this thread... from your first post. Top left is GPO- Post Office Top right is The Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry Last one is an other ranks button to the 71st (Highland) (Light Infantry) date wise from c1825-1871. Your second message as Dioz has already stated is a l...

Re: The Early Military Button project

The only local possibility for the LV is the 'Leeds Pioneers' (Volunteers) who were raised in 1804 and disbanded in 1808 serving under Captain Wade Brown & Lieutenant Samuel Lamb. That is not a definitive ID as there are other Leeds units but their patterns are largely already known. Hope that h...

Re: The Early Military Button project

Hi Ibat, I am going to have to look into yours and see if there is any geographical hits that L could be that had a voluntary unit. The V will be for Volunteers and the L a place name. Leicesterhire has similar examples but will look into this one for you. Tinner, Your previous ones the Engineers bu...

Re: The Early Military Button project

Hi Tinner Really nice early one this. The 33rd Regt of foot gained the (1st Yorkshire West Riding) title in 1782 and its to the unit yours dates. The earliest ones had s roped rim and this design then replaced it, so date wise could be from c1790 onwards and was gone by 1840 at the latest so that's ...

Re: Museum sells medals!!

To be truthful its one the reasons I don't donate stuff to museums, seen it time and time again. I would rather give it to a collector who has an interest in the item and will enjoy it, rather than have some museum flog it off.

Re: Museum sells medals!!

Don't think it matters what they were awarded for it's more that they were donated. If as they say they cannot store or display everything then don't accept them. To take them and flog them off on a website is poor form.
