Re: Viking coin haul 'of historical significance'

Well if it is deliberate concealment then they should get the full sentence of the law.
These people don't give a toss how something like this affects other detectorists, it's just another nail in the coffin for our hobby as i can see it.

Amazing to think this is in the middle of a village and nobody twigged what was going on?

Re: Discuss The Benefits Of Metal Detectorists

Iv'e got to ask this but is this essay kosher?

Re: Row over bones discovery

Problem is that we don't have the full facts about this report yet, I read elsewhere that it was cavers who were using metal detectors when they found human remains and informed the relevant authorities of the remains. If they are bona fide cavers the possibility could be they where doing a cave sur...

Re: A 700-YEAR-OLD English coin has been found

Certainly agree with you jimmy, the largest percentage of coinage found in Scotland is English.
I live in the North of the Highlands and the majority of hammereds I have found so far are English.

Re: A 700-YEAR-OLD English coin has been found

Bit of a tenuous link suggesting it may have been among the spoils of battle taken back to the abbey by the Bruce from the battlefield, from an area like an abbey I would expect a whole range of coins from different periods to turn up.

Agree with lammy defo underpaid if it was a penny a month!

Re: Night hawkers strike Whitby abbey

I didn't say it was definately night hawkers, i just said probably, which was my opinion, it hasn't been proved either way if it was or wasn't nighthawkers. Very true weldbuzz, I wasn't getting at you personally it was the beeb and EH who have already condemned detectorists as the guilty parties, t...

Re: Night hawkers strike Whitby abbey

Sorry this does annoy me that it is being branded nighthawkers without any positive evidence or proof, I am not discounting it but all I have heard and seen so far doesn't pove it is nighthawkers. I wonder what the reaction from EH would be if someone from NCMD contacted them and asked if they could...

Re: Night hawkers strike Whitby abbey

Lump of iron found doesnt prove its nighthawkers, nighthawkers aint going to go round digging up iron, if they do either their detector is a maplins special or they are lousy at detecting, they won't want to waste time digging iron, only spot on signals also any nighthawker would know the area would...

The most expensive, made from 28 grams of pure gold, will set Tolkien enthusiasts back NZ$3695 ($A3020) but has a face value of just NZ$10

If you are reffering to the pic in the link I think that picture is of the Tollund Man which was found in the 1950s I think.

Why do they think next year is not looking good?

Hope they are not thinking the jet stream is going to be permanently stuck south of the UK.

Re: spanish galleon treasure stolen from museum

Robbing barstewards, should keelhaul them when they catch them.

Seems thieves are targeting the smaller local museums which have little security these days for easy pickings.

Shame on them as Mull museum is staffed by volunteers, entry is free and they depend entirely on donations.
