Re: Harvest is nearly here.

I drove back from Southampton to my home in Staffordshire last Saturday, doing about 150 miles and passing hundreds, if not thousands of fields...and every one looked a definite shade of green. Did not see a single field that looked anywhere near to being ready as yet. :g48:

Re: Club Speakers

I think that's a very good idea. I've just been re-arranging our speaker for next Tuesday's club meeting, as the original ones have dropped out at the last minute. I have a roster of speakers that we've used before, but it's well worth having access to a list that one can search by region. I'll sort...

Re: Golden find at Northumberland Roman fort

I think some of the historians or archaeologists seem to be way out when it comes to how much these coins were worth. A Roman soldier would probably be getting between 1 and 2 denarii a day, and a gold aureus like this was equivalent to 25 denarii. That would make it around 12 to 25 days' pay and ce...

Re: A 700-YEAR-OLD English coin has been found

I also think that the link between the coin and the battle is tenuous in the extreme. Thousands of coins of Edward would probably have been used and lost in Scotland, simply because it was a penny's worth of silver and nobody is going to say no to that, regardless of whose head is on the coin. We fi...

Re: Boy finds "bomb"

Can't see anywhere in that report, or in the report on the BBC website, that says they were out on Roydon Common "with landowner's permission to dig". Would I be correct in assuming it's just another case of somebody buying a machine and then thinking they can just stroll where they like a...

Farmers needed...

I have recently received an email from John Wells of the NCMD, asking for assistance... The BBC are interested in producing a programme on Green waste and are very keen to talk to farmers who are annoyed that their land has been dumped on. Do we have any farmers who would be willing to take part in ...

Re: Staffordshire Hoard to go on tour

do we know what tektor found it ?? It was an older White's model - an XLT I think. Despite what some of the headlines at the time shouted out, Terry did not find this hoard with a £2.50 detector bought at a car boot sale. He did start his detecting career with such a machine, but he's been using Wh...

Re: Anglo-Saxon gold metal detector is also a relic

I've just been talking to Terry and was with him on Sunday as well. The first detector he bought for £2.50 he recalls as being an old C-Scope TR80, which would have cost around £43.50 when new back in the late seventies. The machine he used to find the hoard was a White's, as already mentioned. He's...

Re: Treasure hunt coins sell for £35k

That's interesting, since there is no mention at all of these coins going through the treasure process. With such a group and such an important coin in there, I can't see that they would go through the process and then be disclaimed, and it does say they were sold at auction.

Re: Times Online article

Well at least it's reasonably positive, although he can't spell brooch and I go detecting nor detectoring. I think I may add a reply to that article.
