Re: Jersey's monument 'damaged by detectorist'

Perhaps this was why they thought it was a detectorist and not a badger?
'A man was spotted "illegally" using a detector and a trowel at the grade 1 listed archaeological site, Jersey Heritage (JH) said.'

Re: More treasure-hunters could be forced to hand over

Blame all the detectorists who don't declare or record their finds. To give one example - in 2007-8 I fieldwalked a farm near here with the local archaeology group, and we found lots of Roman & medieval pottery - enough to suggest there had been considerable activity on the site. Last year I wen...

Re: Lead bag and cloth seals

As the bagseal gallery is down at present, I'd be grateful if someone (are you there, Stu?) could confirm that these are from phosphate bags? Some of the 'Leeds Phosphate Company' ones have a star of David but also have the company name on the other side, rather than a number, as here. And just to m...

Here's the reverse - apart from being a London maker it's not much help.

Re: Livery buttons

Here's another one from Leicestershire. The centaur or Sagittarius seems to be quite common on crests but usually has a bow & arrow, not a spear, so hopefully someone can pin this down for me (cos I'm b***ered if I can....... :g45: )

Re: US tourists paying thousands to trudge UK fields

At least it looks as though their finds are getting recorded - which is a damn sight better than quite a few UK metal detecting clubs.

Re: Livery buttons

That sounds spot on - Merevale Hall is within 5 miles of the findspot, and I think if you go back far enough the land was formerly owned by Merevale Abbey.
Great i.d., thanks very much. :g50:

Re: Livery buttons

Here's one for you - found in Leicestershire, but not too far from the Warwickshire border. I've had a look but can't find a match for it on your website.

Re: Canon Photoshot SD890IS

You can download a free program called paint.net from here https://www.getpaint.net/ It's quite complicated if you've never used a digital editor before (but its a bloody sight easier than photoshop!), but one thing that you can do with it which is absolutely brilliant is use the 'Levels' command to...
