Re: Gold stolen from British museum

Makes me laugh when they say items 'go missing' - nothing in a museum can go missing!! Stolen - YES.

After some thought I decided to donate the finds stipulating that I wished them to be displayed, this th...

Re: Nighthawks caught in the act

A shame they call them 'Metal Detectorists' as they are most certainly not, what they actually are, are CROOKS and THIEVES. Just because they use a metal detector for their thieving does not make them metal detectorists. A bit like saying a thief who used a twelve bore at a bank robbery is a Pheasan...

Yes indeed and I would be very surprised if they are going to all that trouble, just to melt them down for scrap - targeted robberies, with an end market in sight I would imagine?

Re: Explosives used to rob silverware from church

A spate of Church robberies it says? I am amazed that an Elizabethan silver chalice is not held in a bank vault? Yes sounds like they are using Semtex or something similar and a very professional outfit doing the robberies. Surely these Churches have a state of the art security system in place, incl...

Re: Henry Cole is back for another hunt

I personally thought that the Detectorists series was really well directed and acted, with a humorous side running through each episode, not to be taken seriously, as it was fiction!!

Whereas Henry Cole's series does not portray what I call serious metal detecting at all.

Re: Coins from the Lydford mint

Thanks for posting this up - not far from me the Lydford mint :g50: I am convinced that Saxon pennies were never used by the general public as currency, only used in trade abroad and for paying off the Vikings (by the ton!) or possibly used for paying taxes to the king. If they were used as currency...

Re: Hawks ahoy

Yes I agree totally with Kev - responsible and experienced detectorists should be used on these vulnerable sites, to record all of the finds and then I would suggest the sites are seeded with small round steel washers or the like :g50: Then signage displayed at the site to say all historical finds h...
