Re: Angry farmer
Once a nighthawker kicked out of any club, or the likes of FID/NCMD, a nighthawker who will have no cover when they get caught. I say "they", because we cannot assume that the crime is only in the realms of a single gender. Do you think someone willing to steal would be that bothered abou...

Re: Permits for Metal Detecting on Farm Land?
Almost any other hobby/sport requiring access to someone elses land involves a fee. Maybe the hobby has had it free for too long?
It certainly makes a difference if (as a club) you speak to a landowner and offer him ££`s for a weekend. Nothing wrong with it as a revenue stream for farmers in my book.

Re: Hoard valued at £3.285 million
Terry's detecting was the gentle exercise as prescribed by his Doctor for his heart and angina. He only ever does one or two hours at a time. So comments about his past legitimate benefit claims are un-called for thank you. Oh I do apologise for having an opinion on what I think is morally right. T...

Re: Angry farmer
Indeed "naming & shaming" goes a very long way. Unfortunately what then happens when a known nighthawk then repents, sees the error of their ways and wants to become respectable?? Do you accept what they have done & welcome them with open arms ? I know for sure I wouldn`t !!! As my...

Re: Hoard valued at £3.285 million
A fair value that is affordable for the museums and sets the landowner & finder fair for life.
Terry could also comfortably afford to refund the benefits he claimed whilst happily going out detecting. That would be pleasing.

Re: Angry farmer
Do you seriously think anyone caught detecting illegally would receive a jail term? I doubt we could even rely on the CPS to charge them with the right offence (like the guys in Essex that walked away scot free). The only way to deal with the problem is an offence of "National Heritage crime&qu...

Re: Father and son to stand trial for Bronze Age theft
Well it needs a "show trial" just to take the heat off the hobby. Local landowners here are being plagued by chancers lately. Doesn`t do the legitimate detectorists & clubs any favours. Time for some Islamic justice...sever a finger or six, that`ll stop em !!

Re: First find a hoard...........
Man walks into Maplins, on the spur of the moment decides to buy a detector. Lives near a field and, like a kid with a new toy, can`t wait to try it out. Off he goes and finds that.......... He panics THEN DOES THE RIGHT THING by turning the find into the museum. He is probably now very wise as to l...

Re: Swine flu
At the risk of sounding boring....... At the moment its reasonably mild (if you have underlying health problems, are young or elderly its the same risk level as ANY flu). Now is a good time for the NHS/Local authorities etc to format plans and "practice" distribution logistics etc etc whil...

Simple.....lean the detector against your spade, retire to a safe distance, sit down (lower than the detector & spade) and watch nature at work. If your machine gets frazzled think yourself lucky & buy a new one!!
