People would have taken the shortest route to their neighbours dwellings.If I were you,I would try and do some research and see if there are any roman roads around the area.There will be finds to be made but make sure you gain permission from the landowners.

I use the same batteries for my detectors Tom.Very good and last a lot longer than many rechargables.I got some off ebay for £4.80 for a pack of four including delivery! It pays to shop around.
