I assume a professional detectorist is one which does detecting surveys to support planning applications. They are often required in South Scotland. I can't think of any other way to make a living from detecting. It would be like a lottery based business model, high risk high (or no!) return.

Keep it simple with your first, then when you've mastered it, move up.
XLT has a myriad of controls, but you can start in the presets and then start tweeking. Be patient and you'll get one for 200 or less.
