I really wouldn't say that the deus is that complicated if you don't want it to be. Once you have selected the mode, the rest is pretty straightforward. I would say almost turn on and go. I cannot speak for any other machine but of course, if you have good sites, then most machines should be perfect...

Hello jimbo. Getting started is tough, but if you can swing permission somewhere, it really helps. Failing that, I would advise you to find a club somewhere near to you, they may have occasional digs or land to detect. This will also enable you to meet like-minded people who will be able to help you...

Finding permission to search is the awkward bit. Finding out who owns what is also tricky and I find that it often pays just to ask when out and about. Someone always knows someone who may be of use in gaining permission to search.
