that might be so but it doesnt change the fact that the treasure valuation committee is a closed shop that massively undervalues the value of these items. lets face it how low a price would the committee put on that helmet?....£10k? £20K.......on appeal maybe reach £40K?

Christie's could not reveal whether the buyer is British or overseas – a Californian phone bidder, presumed to be the Getty museum, dropped out at £800,000 – but the museum's best hope is that it is either a UK buyer willing to loan, or if it has been bought overseas that the government will impose an export bar to allow time to raise the money to match the sale price.
Info from museum contacts online says its an overseas bidder

Amazed with the 1.7m Tullie House had to bid with - they were so close!

Who knows ? I'm probably getting cynical in my old age, but I tend not to take everything I see at face value. Or believe every story I read.

Somebody mentioned the Coenwulf penny. There are still many who have doubts about it's claimed find spot.

This time it may well be all legal and above board, but I'll keep an open mind.

Or never found at all officialy or even discovered locked away in a cupboard in the usa somewhere as part of hidden collection and god knows how long its been there etc, changing the law can sometimes have a reverse effect than its meant to, I wonder how many Scots finds are 'found' in England or never found at all as far as Scotland knows, how many Irish finds are 'never' found and recorded?

we're all doomed........ :g64:

I prefer my glass half full mentality - doesnt always work mind, but at least Im not thinking negative thoughts all the time - life is pants enough without that :superhappy:

Seriously guys, I believe the find spot has been visited by PAS already (at least when the finder decided to do the right thing and finally reveal the findspot to them :g10: ) and there may well be an excavation to take place as there are signs of occupation at the find spot.

In cases like this they would probably also have taken soil samples.

Ok, all may be above board in this case, but over the years the history of archaeology has been strewn with scams and hoaxes. Hence my scepticism.

Good peice on the ITV local news tonight. Lindsey Alison Jones talked a lot of sense
about changes to the treasure laws, and metal detecting.

If only they used my treasure system there would be no problem!! Provided the finder reports the find spot accurately then he can sell it to any collector who can demonstrate proper care of it with the proviso that it must be made available for bona fide study. ..... Does anyone know the chain of events, that involved the finding, excavation,
conservation and reporting of the helmet ?

Was the PAS involved at any point ?
