Re: £2 million helmet sparks farmland treasure hunt
I agree, I was fuming last night when the BBC midnight news on R4 said a "Treasure Hunter" had found the mask. When will this sound bite nonsense end?
Just because you are not paranoid, it does not mean that they are not out to get you

They will be following us next with camcorders to make sure we do not pocket anything valuable
These reporters should spend a day with us and see what we actually find, shotgun cases, .22 cases, bronze nails and buttons and that is on a good day

Re: £2 million helmet sparks farmland treasure hunt
To be honest Dave, I'm getting a bit sick to death of it. I have been to some rallies and hate the way some detectorists 'rape' the fields(and I don't use that word lightly). They have no interest in history or anything. This hobby gets me down sometimes The big finds just encourage the wrong people to join!!Donnydave wrote:They will be following us next with camcorders to make sure we do not pocket anything valuable

Actually the article is pretty much spot on in my honest opinion.
“Responsible metal detectorists can unearth much that contributes to our heritage and helps to enrich the history of any given area, but landowners must have control over all activities on their property.
Well said that man.

I agree with that statement. It is the reporter and the headlines that alarm me.jcmaloney wrote:Actually the article is pretty much spot on in my honest opinion.

Todays news, tomorrows chip papers, these things come and go. About a months time the detectors will start appearing on ebay, theres nothing like a cold wet rainy day with nothing found to encourage those without the real interest to sell up and move on.

Whilst I agree with JCM,I doubt the landowners will read that ....15 quid a booklet for members or 22 quid for non members.jcmaloney wrote:Actually the article is pretty much spot on in my honest opinion.

"As someone who likes to think of themself as a responsible detectorist.
There are serious concerns in some quarters, as to the authenticity of the Helmet find.
With many of the belief that it was found elsewhere in Europe."
Is this to believed?

Check Paul Barford's blog, he has made some pertinent points.marcsdigs wrote:I was interested in what was left in the comments area.......

Re: £2 million helmet sparks farmland treasure hunt
theres a lot of stuff smuggled over from north africa and elsewhere so it could be a plant .you would need to be very experienced to find one piece and then go on to find all the rest of the scrap metal pieces

Re: £2 million helmet sparks farmland treasure hunt
I did read Paul Barford's blog and yes he does make pertinent points but the fact that the Romans embraced and assimilated all cultures and let them celebrate their own deities and customs is conveniently forgotten. Maybe it was an import that someone brought over here, but a long time ago! Maybe it was the spoils of a foray! I think sometimes we can look too deeply into things and should accept them on 'face' value. As far as finding all of the 'scrap metal' pieces goes, once you have found a complete mask would you leave any other contextual pieces of metal behind? I wouldn't!
