Archys "We want to dig up Henry VIII"

Post by Steve Rice »

Two American archaeologists have asked the Queen of England for permission to dig up Henry VIII and use the latest techniques to reconstruct his face. Bioarchaeologist Catrina Whitley and anthropologist Kyra Kramer popped the question because they're interested in seeing how accurate the royal portraits of the famous king really are. They also want to perform DNA tests to see if he suffered from a rare illness that might have driven him insane.

Wonder what Prince Philip had to say when he heard that one? :g43:
Politicians and nappies have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

Charles I was buried at Windsor castle on 9th Feb 1649. Gods executioner got that right then.

Edward II was killed at Berkeley Castle with a red hot poker shoved up his backside, he was then interred in Gloucester Cathedral where you can still go and see him today. :g62:

Google is a wonderful thing!

Mixture of burial places since William I, the more recent ones are in Westminster Abbey or St George's Chapel, there are one or two (and a queen or two) in Fontrevault Abbey in France and one or two "disappeared".

There is actually a farily long tradition of checking tomb contents of major historical figures - quite a lot of graves were opened in the 19th C (and anyone interested in Costume History, a few of the clothing examples in Janet Arnolds books are from burials) and the statue of Robert I at Bannockburn has facial features based on his actual skull (although I don't think the NTS had him dug up specially!)

before they put the poker up they inserted a tube as it was not right to harm the outer body of a royal :g56: not a good way to go, it was said the screams were heard for miles.
