200-piece haul of Viking jewellery + coins dug up

Post by Steve Rice »

A metal detecting enthusiast unearthed 'the find of a lifetime' when he discovered a Viking treasure hoard including 200 pieces of silver jewellery.
Darren Webster dug up a 1,000-year-old casket that also held coins, hacksilver and ingots while scouring at an undisclosed location on the border between Cumbria and North Lancashire.
Experts at the British Museum in London say the find is of 'national significance'.

18 inches deep. How many of us give up after 12 inches thinking it must be deep iron.

Too true I can remember when I started detecting again I had a cracking signal with my 1220
showing all the way round positive signal, I was convinced it was a hoard ,but I only had a garden trowel and could only dig mm,s into the hard clay, so I went home for the garden spade, got back to eventually find a 4inch cast iron pipe :g44:
